Course Description:
The seminar offers an overview of the issues surrounding the role played by English in a modern African society, with specific reference to Southern Africa. After a preliminary consideration of the geographical spread of English against the background of the "three circles of English" model the seminar will provide an account of the varying sociolinguistic situations of English in South Africa and Namibia, Angola and Mozambique and then the rest of Southern Africa consisting of former British colonies. This will be followed by an examination of the phonological, syntactical, semantic and discoursal features of English in Africa. The features will be discussed in the light of Kachru's concept of the cline of proficiency as products of people's use of the language in a widening range of social domains. Instances of these features for English in Southern Africa will be provided and discussed in terms of questions about the appropriateness of Kachru's model. Issues of language contact, target models in education, multilingualism, language planning and policy, languages and political pluralism, languages of creative expression, attitudes and globalization  will then be discussed. At the end of the seminar students will have gained a general understanding of English as a living language that adapts to meet the various demands made upon it in various parts of the world.
